Ash Ra Tempel.
Frank Zappa, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, The Who, Jefferson Airplane и Jimi Hendrix.

Story about tolerance

">
I have always loved cartoons and it was a real pleasure yesterday to watch one of the most astonishing cartoons I have seen recently - Le chat du rabbin.
The action takes place in Algiers of the 20s. The main characters are a Sephardi rabbi and his cat, which suddenly starts talking after eating the parrot of the rabbi and expresses its desire to convert to Judaism. As it turns out from some other comments on IMDB the director of the movie is a Jew. That explains the strong Jewish connection in the movie. The Sephardi rabbi is a symbol of tolerance that we would like to see in more rabbis nowadays. His best friend is the Muslim sheik Mohamed, who is depicted as well as incarnation of religious tolerance. The rabbi has no problem to go to the orthodox church, when he has to.

The only people, who disturb him are the arrogant French colonialists, who have their own cafes forbidden for Arabs and Jews. The colonialists are also a symbol of the overwhelming bureaucracy that bothers the rabbi. Bureaucracy that borders almost with bullying. Thus the rabbi has to make a French language exam (dictate), in order to be certified for a rabbi of the municipality, even though he is leading this municipality for 10s of years already.
The movie mixes up also other motifs - all of a sudden a young Russian painter appears in the movie, explaining that he is running from the Russian revolution. His dream to find Jerusalem is bringing together the rabbi, his friend the sheik, the Russian painter - who is somehow resembling Chagall (also the name of the ship with which he is coming to Algiers is called Chagall) and a rich Russian exile, who still cannot understand how God can permit the killing of his tsar. This funny band is crossing the whole Mama Africa seeking for the Jerusalem. The journey across is depicted in one of the most stunning drawings of the African continent I have ever seen - the desert, the savanna, the jungle everything is animated with such a love. Finally the groups finds the golden city Jerusalem, however they have to remain disappointed - the inhabitants are kicking the foreign people out of the holly city. Maybe this aggression should be a hint for the situation nowadays between the Israel and its neighbors - mistrust everybody, tolerate nobody.

"A Dangerous Method"

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='С.

2008. When the movie was over the only one thing I was able to say was “What a Hollywood bullshit?”

Well the last days I am no longer sure that it was such bullshit, not because of the ideas that have been claimed there, but because of this mindless and stupid aggression, looting, chaos and riot bands that were coining the movie. Well, no need to wait until the 2027 – the chaos is there right now– on the streets of London, Birmingham, and Manchester… It came as a shock – all of a sudden in a situation when actually the world was dealing with another huge issue – the double dip recession. Right now all agenda setters are confused what to put on the first page – the financial big dipper or the British riots or maybe the famine in Somalia. Somehow all these events are writing history right now and somehow nobody knows what will come out of this situation.

In the last days I was closely following the reportage in UK. The main tenor of the coverage was coherent with my own opinion to the things that are happening there – brainless, senseless aggression of bored youngsters, who have no role models, no authorities to step in their lives. Indeed there are plenty of comments that are claiming that the whole situation was provoked by the lack of perspectives for the youth – no jobs, raising university fees. There were even voices blaming the current budget cuts in the social sphere for the riots. Well I tend to blame also such social factors when something like this is happening, but in this case it is so obvious the social causes are just an excuse for looting and robberies.

This is the fundamental difference between these protests and those in the Middle East. The Arab youths went to the streets in the name of freedom and democracy. Also their lives were coined of lack of perspectives, but they were protesting and fighting against those, who have stolen their future – namely the fabulously rich dictators governing the countries. In the case of UK all these teens and young people on the street do not know even what they fight for – the main goal is to steal a plasma TV or expensive pair of training shoes and if possible to do that from those, who are at least protected – the small shops in the neighbourhood. I was listening to a reportage of BBC from the streets of Hackney. The journalist was asking two girls, if they were out in the first night of the protest. They replied positively and even were cheering what has happened. The journalist was telling them that they were actually damaging the livelihood of the small businesses in their community. Their reply was – well these people are rich and they deserve to be looted. This interview made me shivering. Also during the looting of the Jewish shops before the outbreak of the II World War young people were involved, who were completely sure that the Jews deserve to be robbed, because they are rich. What does this mean? That we haven´t learned from history? That our society has not even made one single step forward, even if we claim what a huge progress we have done in the last years? There are still wide masses of people, who are simply brainless and do not question the things that they do, the things that they hear, the things that they see… This is scary….very, very scary

There is also another aspect in this story. In fact the people rioting on the streets were mostly from the black community as well as low class white English people. Asian and Arabic people were there rather to protect their properties and not to loot. Again on BBC I have heart that there were two reasons for that – on one side right now is Ramadan and the Muslim families are mostly together, on the other side the Muslim parents are far more authoritarian than the parents in other cultures nowadays. I have to say that even in the terms of the tragedy in Birmingham the Muslim community was that trying to stop any further violence. The taxi driver has been quoted in the Guardian: "Everybody says to their sons: please don't start another riot. People don't want trouble any more. I just say we want peace, peace, peace."

The mourning father of one of the killed man in Birmingham said:

All this is going into one direction. Nobody wants the brainless riots from the last weeks to merge in racial riots. No normal person needs it – maybe some bored teenagers, who are looking for some fun and adrenaline this summer do, but nobody else. This people live in the same neighbourhoods, their kids go to the same schools, and they have lived together and want to continue to do so.

When I was reading all this I was wondering why the police on the island is somehow so invisible. Maybe I am used to German style demonstrations, where the policemen are everywhere. Every 1st of May the water cannons are ready to intervene any time, hidden in the side streets of Kreuzberg. I do not say that this is good especially in Germany where the people go to the streets to demonstrate for some real cause, but like that all people who are there not for the peaceful and constructive demonstration will think twice before starting looting and rioting. In Germany the police do not think 4 days, if they have to do it or no. They just do it with all positive or negative consequences. And to be honest in this case I think the British police should have done the same in the very beginning, maybe this way the riots would have been stopped on this very first day in Tottenham and the men from Birmingham would have not been killed while trying to protect their businesses – a job that should be done actually from the police.

"Wir riefen Arbeitskräfte und bekamen Menschen..."

picture: filmjaeger.de

Дими Паница - in memorial!

*tweet from George Michael

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='"Berlin. Who has the right to decide about areas that were public spaces for far more than 20 years- the citizens, the investors or the municipality? Can a public space that has been a recreation area ever since 1900 become all of a sudden a luxury housing complex or a park house? What kind of recreation areas deserves a city like Berlin? What would it take to get it? Looking for answers HAU (Theater Hebel am Ufer) has organized the event “Luna Park Berlin”, which took place in the last weekend of May in the former Spreepark in Plänterwald.

It has been ten years since the former owner (Norbert Witte) got bankrupt and the park has been abandoned. Witte took what he was able to load from the park into a cargo ship and left to Peru in an attempt to open a new Luna Park there. However, he and his son mixed up with drugs dealing and both ended up in jail – Witte Senior in Germany and Witte Junior in a notorious Peruvian jail. The full story of Norbert Witte can be seen in the movie “Achterbahn” (2009).

Ever since then the whole former park area was closed. Of course, you were able to get into it illegally, but there was security watching for “housebreakers”. Currently there are a couple of plans how the whole area should be reused in the future. The recent one is to build a park house for 900 cars there and the municipality will implement this plan, if an investor wins the pitch. The main objective of the event last weekend was to tackle the issue: does the municipality have the right to do so, without taking into account the desires of the local residents.
In order to understand the complexity of the issue one should take into account all changes Berlin has been through in the last 20 years. All of them lead sadly into one direction – gentrification of the city. All of them have been implemented without taking into account the wishes of the local people. I have gathered a short list of places that have changed their faces within the 3 years since I am in Berlin. The occupied houses (Liebigstr14 & Brunnenstr. )- no man´s land in the 90s, they belong now to investors, who have kicked out the residents, in order to make their investment pay back. Beach bars such as Bar 25, Kiki Blofeld, clubs such as Maria am Ostbahnhof have been or will be closed and destroyed this summer, in order to make place for the so called Media Spree or other building projects. The question about the future of Mauerpark (there are existing plans to build flats on the place of the flea market) and Tempelhof are still in the air. The old radar station next to Teufelsberg can be visited now only with guided (paid) tours. Only last summer you were still able to get through the damaged fence. The building of the CO Gallery – art exhibition area in the former post station, Mitte at Oranienburger Str. - has been bought by an Israeli investor and supposed to be closed in the nearest future. The building will be renovated and turned into luxury shops and a hotel.[1] This list can be prolonged into infinity. (!!!) I want to stress once again the fact that this has happened only within less than 3 years.

The old Spreepark will be most probably added to this list of old Berlin jewelry, for which one day I will be just telling legends to my guests. “The horrible office building on the river side used to be a beach bar” or “The lofts over there used to be one of the most vivid flea markets in Germany.”
I can understand the viewpoint of the local governance – Berlin is a very poor city, with lots of debt, so the easiest way to get some money is to sell all these abandoned spaces to investors, who will make from them part of a sparkling city that attracts older richer tourists, who themselves bring money into the city. But is it also the wisest way?
The question is what will happen with a city that tries to leave behind its own authenticity and charm and get into the shoes of other cities. Until now one of its main focuses as a touristic destination was exactly the underground flavor and all these abandoned free places, which were focal points for all young people all over Europe. The city has neither this romantic flavor that Paris has, nor the aristocratic look of London or the coziness of Amsterdam. Berlin is not a chilled and timeless city like Barcelona or Lisbon. It has a hard time rebranding itself as a culture capital of Europe, but this is not the high class culture of Vienna that brings the money of the old culture snobs.

The strengths of Berlin are different: It has played a very important role in the history of the XX century, which is really attractive for many tourists, who are contemporaries to these times. The city can offer in-depth insight in the communistic past of Europe without any need to go far away to Russia or Eastern Europe. Besides that life as tourist in Berlin is hilariously cheap. But there are also lots of irrational reasons for its popularity. Berlin is just cool – cool because of its underground culture, because of its occupied houses, because of the radar station on Teufelsberg, because of Maria am Bahnhof, Mauerpark etc. I want to quote here the flyer for the Spreepark event: Berlin is for many young people something like a big luna park. People are coming to Berlin to queue for two hours in front of Berghain in the Mid-winter or just to go to Mauerpark, because friends of them have given them “this list” of insider must see underground spots ;-) The problem is that this list is getting shorter and shorter as the list of refurbished buildings and areas is getting longer.

One day the city government will regret that and even more they will regret that they have missed the opportunity to add Spreepark (one of the last such places in the more or less central part of Berlin) to the list of cool spots that makes Berlin the city u love!

[1] The negotiations with the investor are still running. The aim is to prolong the rental period of the gallery by 2012 or even to let the gallery buys from the investor the part of the building, where the gallery is situated right now.

tt11

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 128px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t3d7x5n20Oo/TdTrUUF9ZMI/AAAAAAAAAGk/k7X1XXdqb3A/s320/tt11_start_breit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608366170206725314" />

© Berliner Festspiele/ tt11

Cruel Intentions

"Face off"

Citizen Journalism

"Citizen Journalism".

"Biutiful"

On Tuesday this week I finally managed to watch the new Iñárritu´s movie "Biutiful".
After reading a couple of comments beforehand and knowing a couple of the old Inarritu movies I was pretty prepared that these will be very depressing 148 minutes. Maybe I was even too good prepared, because after the movie I was not shocked the same way as after Amores perros.
There are some differences between this movie and the older Iñárritu´s movies. In the past he was always creating a couple of main parallel plots (multi-layers) that were independent at the beginning but somehow connected at the end. This time there was one main linear plot that was somehow divided into different stories (maybe too many different stories) that were connected through the character of Javier Bardem, who makes really an amazing role in this movie. At the end of the movie though I had the feeling that some of the stories were not really fully developed.

Iñárritu has succeeded to show the other face of Barcelona that remains pretty hidden for the tourists that drink their sangria in Barrio Gotico and lay on the beach in Barceloneta and feel themselves pretty good depicted in "Vicky, Christina, Barcelona". This is a face full of suffer, illegal immigrants, hidden slavery, poverty, corruption and misery. This is a face, where the lives of the group Asian workers does not have other value than moving them from business to business, in order to make more profits for their "owners". In this world there is nothing such a responsibility and loyalty. Everybody fights to survive in this jungle. Thus the Senegal woman chooses to take the money that the dying Uxbal ( Javier Bardem) is giving to her to look after his two children and she goes instead back to her family in Senegal leaving the Uxbal children without nothing, but their mother with bipolar syndrom and to be honest I was not able to blame her, because the movie was so full of moral and ethical dilemmas that at the end you really do not know what is good and what is bad.

There was one more very impressive thing about this movie - its camera. The way the suffering of Uxbal has been filmed as well as the way Barcelona with its hidden people has been shown was so realistic that it had something of a documentary movie in it.

Liebig 14 forever?

On the other side of the Earth

Sam Rainsy Party.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tGklNWMMWOM/TLi9qnxZT_I/AAAAAAAAADo/lLNHSbGG5lw/s320/IMG_1616.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528377082525601778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tGklNWMMWOM/TLjAusBg3VI/AAAAAAAAADw/2tgEhD_Xvdg/s320/IMG_1778.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528380450921307474" />

You know that the polygamy marriage is forbidden in Germany? Ok passed, you are integrated.

Two years ago, there was a big big discussion about the so called „Einbürgerungstest“ in Germany. I have heard from some people, who were involved with integration at that time that even some the CDU/CSU MP`s, who have insisted on implementing this test in the process for applying for a citizenship would have problems accomplishing it. There were always samples in some online newspapers that I have been clicked at that time just for fun. And then it seemed a kind of ok to me. I took a bit time this weekend – maybe from love to multiple choice questions - to have a look at the whole text – around 300 questions and to be honest I cannot really understand where is the point for some people to visit special classes, in order to pass it.
The test is mostly intuitive. Besides of some questions like the one who is the composer of the Germany national hymn, the questions are rather fair, but those that struck me the most was the nature of some questions. The test is divided in questions for the German state system, the German history and the German society. It is really amazing that one of the main focuses on the first part are questions about the state independence from the religion, as the last part is full with questions, whether polygamy is allowed in Germany and if you might beat your children, if they do not obey you or if they for some reasons chose to marry or live with man, that the parents do not really like.
Well with other words on one side the test is pretty tendentious, on the other side I am not really convinced that questions about polygamy marriage have anything to do with integration ;-)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pandazavur.blogspot.com/2010/04/you-know-that-polygamy-marriage-is.html' title='You know that the polygamy marriage is forbidden in Germany? However the result at the end was really pathetic. It seemed to me that some young directors made their contribution to the yearly Mexican movie challenge. There was hardly any sign of revolution exept for the second movie, where a daughter was transporting the dead body of her father – hero from the revolution – through the Mexican boarder. We had there at least a couple of old fellow, who were remebering the „revolucion“.

The q&a session at the end was also total disaster. It is nice to come and see Berlin at Berlinale time, but when you come there to tell the people that the only one revolution that you have seen in your life time was Mc Donalds and that therefore you decided to send your protagonists there, then your concept sounds a little bit off the mark.Or the other highlight was, as one of the other directors simply told to the public that he used to have small piece of land at the coast and decided to create his own revolution making of of the actors to cut the grass there....real revolution, real art, real modern cinema...

I am a bit sleepy now and I am definitely missing some points, but to sume it up the movie was really weak, chaotic, relaying on nice landscapes and music and showing stories without any meaning.

Isn´t it ironic?!

Isn´t it ironic, while we are arguing about the performance of Rumiana Jeleva, which was evidently weak for a bunch of reasons, powerful 6,2 magnitude earthquake has hit Haiti and left so far unclear number of victims.

It is quite cynically, but such disasters hit always the weakest. One of the main reasons for that is that they are less prepared for such disasters. Weak governance that leads to weak organization in such cases, comparatively lower investment, if at all any, in infrastructure, colonial buildings that have not been renovated and adapted for any kind of natural disasters in the city center of Port au Prince and 3 million people living in slums in houses made of wood and cheap concrete. Well these are the first reasons that come up to my mind. There are for sure further factors for the disastrous situations, but finally the lives of the victims are irreversible.

We can just hope (even if it sounds naïve) that the learning from this disaster will be taken into consideration, because in this particular case it is not only the nature that has caused so many victims. These are at first place the politicians from many generations that have not taken care for their own people.

12th of December - International Day of climate Action!

I do not want to hear any single news about Tiger Woods

In the last two weeks I was really overwhelmed by the news about Tiger Woods and this even without spending a single minute with the most trashy of all media – the TV.
I wanted to sign in my yahoo e-mail the other morning and guess what was the first thing that I have seen there – the picture of Tiger Woods with the headline – „Will Tiger Woods manage to fix his private life?“ As if I do care ...During the day I am usually listening to BBC, where you are used to hard news and analysis, but of course Tiger Wood and his life/wife are very VERY important news, so why do not report about his wife and the assumed car accident, well I got over this one as well, but the story kept following me. I took the metro – just for two stops – and within those two minutes I got my further news update– unidentified woman was taken by ambulance from the Tiger´s home. Well of course this one is breaking news. No matter the victims of the car blast in Iraq...they should have been learnt to play golf.

I asked myself yesterday why the media are covering this story, when there are so many important things to report about. Well there are so many explanations to that that it will take a phd thesis, so. to cut it short – the people need two things – bread and sensations.

Yesterday evening I was listening again to bbc, when the topic of the World Have Your Say was announced. And guess what – Tiger poped up again in my life. To be honest I was first really disappointed that such a respectful media was losing one hour of my and of its time with such a topic, but I´ve decided to give them a chance and I haven´t regret it. The discussion was really furious. The most people felt the same way as me, but actually the main point was not the story of Tiger Woods, but the way people consume news, their hunger for sensations, their rage to the media, if their expectations are not fulfilled and actually I found out that at least most of the listeners of bbc consume news in a very responsible and conscious way and that I was not the only one beeing overwhelmed by the news about Tiger Woods private life.

The whole podcast of World Have Your Say could be downloaded here

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tGklNWMMWOM/SqgIs0Q2FGI/AAAAAAAAAC8/kzpsV2F56b0/s320/102_4813.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379559320930620514" />

Gentrify it!

"The world in which rich rather throw away full plate than risk that poor one would take a bit from it is mad." (unknown leaflet writer at Rigaerstr, Berlin)

These words stroke me today during the demonstration against the next gentrification plan in my district - the new victim is Liebigstr. 14.

Berlin could show every other city in the world what is gentrification in action. The 90s will be remembered with techno, underground and squats (occupied houses). The empty houses were everywhere. They found soon their new tenants, who were not really willing to pay rent or at least not a high one. On the other side they were ready to contribute with their time, passion and vision, in order to create their common living space. The squats were followed by the small alternative bars and cafés, soon came the artists and then at once the districts, which were not at all desired places to live at the beginning of the 90s, became over the night IN and cool. In the first decade of 2000 came the investors and then of course the yuppies. And this was the day, when the squats and their tenants became unwellcome.
Actually this is just a classical description of gentrification.
The gentrification in Berlin is meanwhile one of the most popular reasons for demonstrations and petitions. „ Save Köpi“, „Rigaerstr. 94 bleibt“, „Liebigstr. 14 forever“ are just some examples for threatened by investors squats or houses, where the tenants pay very low rents. Thus the main objective of the investors is to kick out the tenants, to renovate the houses and then to rent them for the five times the current price – as simple as that. And I don´t even doubt that they will find immediately some enough people, who will be willing to pay 700 € for 2-rooms flat there.
The other day I saw a classified ad on our street saying that a young couple is willing to pay 900 € for 3-rooms flat in Fhain....I though to explain them that they are unfortunatelly mixing up Fhain with Schwabing...

Click a tree!

Just few trees left -
http://clickatree.europa.eu/
or Click a tree at My Space.

Bicycles, Bicycles

There are nine million bicycles in Beijing, I am wondering how many bicycles are crossing Amsterdam - for sure less. On our way there we walked down the street of the toys with its main sightseeing - the building of Bandai.
Asakusa itself is nowadays „conquered“ by the commercial spirit. There is a huge market place, where you could find all sorts of typical Japanese souvenirs. However it is quite hard to destinguish, which of them are produced in China and which indeedare made in Japan. Well, to be honest in spite of the commerce it is a really nice feeling to mix up with the crowd. The final touch of the market is the so called Asakusa koen - one of the best examples of the harmonic co-existance of the Shintu shrines and the Buddhist temples. The place is a bit touristic and the Buddhist temple was under renovation. However some other small Buddhist temples were opened and I got the chance to see my first Buddhist temple. The next stop for this day was Ginza. According to Lonely Planet the place is proudly reigning alongside 5th Avenue, Beverly Hills and the Champs-Elysées. Well I have never been in the first two, but Ginza seemed to me a bit more crowded and larger than Champs-Elysées. The weather was quite shity, so we just walked a bit in the huge department stores full with French éclairs.(I was really amazed by the French taste for food of the Japanese). It would not be exageration, if I write here that they have more French than Japanese food in the food corners of the department stores. Well appart from this Ginza has to offer a huge amount of luxury stores, one Sony Building (which is far from impressive - just a kind of ordinary showroom - without the famous SONY Aibo.
After Ginza we decided to conquer another neighbourhood - Shibuya. When you go out from the subway there, the first thing you will see will be the famous Shibuya Crossing - the intersection is famous above others with the scene, where Scarlet Johansson spent a while there in the movie Lost in Translation. We were quite hungry so we immediately approached one noodle bar, where I got the choice between three sorts of Ramen - big portion noodles with pork, medium portion noodles with pork and small portion noodles with pork - nice ;-). Well, the brew was not bad, the staff was nice and the prices really reasonable - so, if you are in the pork stuff the place is called Ogawa Bashi and is in one addorable small street just nearby the Shibuya station. The next stop after the noodle bar was one Game Arcade, where we spent a couple of minutes lost in translation trying to figure out, where is the game consile - Street Fighter 4. The highlight of the Game Arcade was one game with Japanese drums, where you were able to play forward only by druming. I really regret I haven´t tryed this one, but at least I played my first Street Fighter 4…Well, this was the end of the night, after the game arcade we took the Yamanote circle Line and moved one day further...

Day 4:
I think we spend at least a quarter of this day in the subway;-).

We went to Ghibli museum, which is in one of the suburbs of Tokyo - Mitaka. The museum is pretty much made for children and was full of them, but even we as 26 years old children had also a lot of fun there. There were a lot of small instalation from different Ghibli movies such as "My neighbour Totoro"or "Spirited Away", reconstruction of Miyazaki working room (again huge French and Industrialization era influence) and the huge doll cat bus full with children. The best part of the museum was a short Ghibli movie - unfortunatelly in Japanese, but even though very beatiful one.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tGklNWMMWOM/SfSaoINC2bI/AAAAAAAAACU/cwghlczwPfc/s320/Ghibli.JPG" border="0"
After Ghibli we made a short walk in Ueno, where according to our travell guide, we were supposed to find another piece of the old Tokyo - Ameya Yokochó- indeed it was not that spectacular - just an average market - or maybe it was the rain that created a wrong impression of this place, but I still believe that the place was very overrated.
Anyway the next stop for the day was Takadanobaba. Saori told me that this is the only one line on the Yamanote Line, where you could listen to different music - the one from the movie Atom Boy. The explanation is quite trivial - this was the neighbourhood of the Atom Boy creator.
Actually we went to Takadanobaba, in order to have a look at Saori´s university - Waseda - quite impressive campus. We had a dinner in one Izaqiya afterwards and I tryed the most disgusting thing ever - fish guts.

Day 5:

This was our Tsukiji market day - we did our best to get up early. I was told that we have to be there at 08:00 am, in order to catch the fish auctions. Well, we missed it, but we were just in time for the big Suchi eating.
Tsukiji Fish Market is known as one of the biggest Fish markets in the world. The place is really huge. Some months ago it was closed for tourists, because some English guys were making some dirty jokes with the raw fish there. Now it is open again and you could have a walk there. However, you really have to watch out , no wonder that all people there wear rubber boots.
Just a few meters from the market hall, you could experience the taste of the famous Tsukiji fish. Well, you have to be a bit patient. Usually the sushi places are very small and you have to que one hour or even longer. The sushiplace keepers usually let about 10-15 people in, serve them the ordered food and kick them out after 20 or 30 minutes. Only then the next group could get in. You usually order your food, when waiting in the line, so the sushi cook already knows what to prepare for you. They do it simply in front of you with such a skilled move that you are sometimes wondering,if this guy there is a human or a sushicooking humanoid. The sushi is really frish and tasty. So I can only recommend it, though a bit expensive.
The next must see place in Tsukiji is the Hama-rikyu Garden. Lovely place just next to the fish market. The garden is typical example of the Edo period - the family garden of the Tokugawa Shogun. However the best part of the garden is the amazing mixture of harmonic tea houses and lakes and the towering skyscrapers as a coulisse of the modernity. The garden was full with old guys with professional digital cameras trying to catch up some micropics of one yellow flower. Somewhere on the entrance it was said that the plants in this garden are chosen so that at least one of them blooms every season.
The next stop was far away from the old Edo time. With other words we rush in the modernity of Shiodome - skyscrapers, luxury shops and French restaurants and somewhere in the mid of modernity we found another hint that took us back in the time to the steaming plans of Manchester - one post industrial clock designed by the Ghibli guru Miyazaki.
Then we rushed to the imperial Palace. Well, actually rush to the Palace is a kind of exageration, because the Palace is completely closed and surrounded by a moat, but at least we met there one of the most cheerful Japanese people I have ever seen. An old guy, who has never been abroad, but nevertheless he was speaking an amazingly fluent English. He told us that he has started learning Chinese and English with some audio books and now he is coming everyday to the Imperial Palace and talking to the tourists, in order to practice. All old guys seem to be similar everywhere in the world. He was complaining that Tokyo is getting every day dirtyer and the young people are very impolite. Well, we tried to becalm him by saying that Paris or Berlin are even worse, but he was not really willing to believe us. In his imagination Europe was the Paradise.
In the night we went to have dinner with Motoko - Yuki´s and Shin´s friend she took us to one Izakiya and showed me the second best thing in the Japanese kitchen (after the sushi) - the Edamame - boiled and salty soya beans - mmmmm. Now when I go to eat Japanese food in Berlin, I always order them – my personal Tokyo connection.

Day 6

Saori told us that if we want to see the city of the future – Odaiba is the place. Well, to be honest the future there begins from the subway – the line the Odaiba is without a driver and the rails are in the air and go over the Tokyo bay. I felt for the first time in my life like in a character of a science-fiction movie. Odaiba is a manmade island, cobbled together from the dreams of the bubble economy. Nowadays you go there either to visit the national museum of emerging science & innovation – Miraikan Museum or to climb on the Fuji TV tower, which looks also like a setting from the science fiction movie. I have heart that one of the main reasons for the candidacy of Tokyo for the Olympic Games 2016 is exactly this island. They want to build the Olympic village there and to use somehow this heritage for the bubble economy.

If somebody asks me, which is the best place in Odaiba, I will not hesitate to say the Miraikan Museum. The museum is one of those places that could inspire every child to study science. We saw there among others a short show with the Honda´s humanoid Asimo, earthquake simulator and a gorgeous manga movie about the space elevator.

After the museum we climbed to the Fuji TV tower, which was a big trap for tourists especially considering the storm outside this day.

In the night we visited the next lovely neighbourhood (again with huge French influence – Harajuku&Aoyama). Besides the luxury designer shops, which were not less than those in Ginza, this neighbourhood is famous with the cutie shops, where you could find all sorts of infantile outfits.

The final touch of this night was one running sushi in Shibuya – just in front of the noodle place - Ogawa Bashi. We just took our places there starving and ready to eat the whole sushi in the world, when the number of the plates on the running band just started to decrease. The cook told us something and we just nodded expecting the plates to start running around again, so our disappointment was really great when he just put all boxes with fish in the fridge and closed the running band…lost in translation we went back to the hostel.

Day 7

Our last day in Japan was devoted to the lovely town of Kamakura. We were told from a friend of mine that going there would be a total waste of time, since the only one thing worth seeing there is the statue of the sitting Buddha. Luckily everybody is writing his own story and we decided to go there and give Kamakura a chance and Kamakura did not let us down ;-)

Kamakura is the ancient capital of Tokyo. The town is famous with its unagi and the temples, which have grown as mushrooms through out the whole city. We visited three temples and my favourite one became the Hokokuji Temple in the outskirts of Kamakura with a lovely bamboo forest, where we drunk a poison green matcha.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tGklNWMMWOM/SfSaEzS47wI/AAAAAAAAACM/Rh9vxmiD9Ao/s320/bamboo+forest.JPG" border="0" An old lady mixed the matcha powder with a big brush and passed it in a bowl to us. Maybe it was the sun or the magic bamboo forest or it was the mysticism of the Buddhist temple, but this was the tastiest matcha I have ever drunk and the most harmonious moment in Japan.

After the Hokokuji Temple we visited the sitting Buddha, which was obviously the tourist highlight in Kamakura.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tGklNWMMWOM/SfSbSBlMB5I/AAAAAAAAACc/PuAeMUQ6ago/s320/buddha+statue.JPG" border="0" Shortly before taking the train back we went to the ocean….my second one. Unfortunately the weather was quite foggy and we were not able to see Mount Fuji…next time ;-) The ocean was full with surfers and eagles...ma magnificent feeling, magnificent country, magnificent Kamakura...

We spent our last hours in Tokyo trying to catch out the last places we haven´t got the chance to see in this one week. We went to the Tokyo´s sincity - Roppongi. However the only two things we had the chance to see there were two huge shopping centeres full with luxury store...the next Dior, Escada and the other usual suspects.

One of the best parts of Poppongi is the spider statue just in front of the Roppongi Tower and the marvelous view from there to the Tokyo Tower - really beautiful in the night.

We said CIAO to Tokyo eating sushi in one of those sushi running places - mmmm. The last touch was the visit to our last Game Arcade, where we made a couple of those funny teeny sticker...was a m agnificent day and evening...Thank you Saori.

It was time to say goodbye...to Saori, to Tokyo, to the sushi places, the order and the Khaosan Ninja hostel...well, every end is the beginning of something else..and even sounding pathetic, this is the beginning of my next plan to go to Japan.

Tokyo, Day 2

Well, as I´ve already mentioned Akihabara was a big disappontment. So I cannot really explain why we came back there on our 2nd day in Tokyo...but anyway, we had the chance to enjoy Akihabara by day;-) and to surf a bit through the electric city, where we met our friend Pleo - the baby dinozaur. Well, besides Pleo, Ahihabara can offer more or less the same by day time - gaming arcades, manga cafes etc.
After Akihabara we approached another part of the city - the lung of Tokyo - Meiji-jingu. There we had an appointment with Katja´s sister, who has spent tha last 2 years working at the shrine. We ate quite good sashimi and she told us really enthusiastic a couple of things about Japan. It seemed she really enjoyed it. Afterwards she gave us a tour in the shrine and told us some of the legends of the shrine. We. washed our hands as the shintu followers, took lucky charms, versed by the Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken and finally visited a gorgeous exhibition about lacquered objects of art. The highlight of the exhibition was a lacquering workshop, where me myself drown the three monkeys from Nikko.
The next stop for this day was Shinjuku, where I met my beloved Erasmus friend Saori....it has been really a long time, but I think it is always like that with the soulmates, you always feel like you have met them just the other day for a cup of tea - as you have never been some ten thousands kms apart. The evening was really gorgeous - we ate in one running sushi, where a Japanese chef took a bit wasabi with his thumb and put it carelessly on our plates. The running sushi has its quite weird pricing system. Different sorts of bits are put in different small plates. On the wall you have a kind or price list for what price does every type of plate stays for. So finally the waitress would come to you and would count the types of plates and will tell you the bill. Genius in its simplicity. After the running sushi Saori took us to one of her favourite student bars, where almost all tables, where occupied by students in suites. Saori told us that they were at a kind of hiring casting. The bar was only with floor tables - quite authentic. There I had for the first time of my life green tea icecream (not bad at all) ;-) We wre still pretty jetlaged, so shortly after the first the beer we were ready to go to the hostel.

Tokyo, Day 1st

Amsterdam Schiphol was the first stop on our way to Tokyo. Maybe the most impressive thing there besides the exhibition about the Dutch influence in Japan was the naked scanner and the most impolite staff ever. Anyway we overcame this one, got in the plane and fell in the indefinite lightness of the timelessness.
After 12 hours - totally jetlaged - we arrived in Tokyo. The first minutes there broke my expectations for one country, where everybody speaks English. Well, we realised quite fast that we have to find our way to communicate with hands and legs.
We finally managed to reach the hostel, though on our way there we were surpised to realise that the subway map in the Lonely Planet incudes just 50% of the metro lines in Tokyo and the most maps in the metro were in Japanese. The good thing in Japan is that if some English speaking Japanese people see your confusion with the Tokyo metro, they come to you and really try to help you. So thanks to one guy, we have discovered the parallel universe of the JR network - a kind of the local S-bahn or the second metro.
Finally we made it to our Ninja Khaosan hostel. I can only recommend this one. Very kind stuff and the place is unbelievably clean :-)
In the night we went to the famous Electric City - Akihabara. Well, the idea was not that smart, because the neighbourhood offers just plenty of shops for computer games, manga book shops and consumer electronic, but basicly the area cannot offer anything futuristic or spectacular as said in the travell guides. So we a bit lost some hours there, but at least we found a nice place to eat. Well, one of the interesting things about Tokyo is that the most bars and restaurants are hidden in blockhauses. You usually get in the elevator, press one button and then you will find yourself in one of those hidden places that sometimes look more than fancy from the Berliner prospective. So we went to one of those places, where the staff was more than kind. We understood eachother with hands and legs, but we managed to get a table and a menu. Well, this system turned out as not that effective, so she found obviously the only one English speaking person there - the kitch boy, who really helped us with ordering the most tasty food for this day. Well, the problem of the Japanese restaurants is that the portions are very tiny, so you really have to take more than one, in order to get full, but maybe this is a kind of Western thinking. Maybe the Japanese philosophy is not just to get stuffed with food, but really to enjoy it ;-)
I think these were the highlights, if I could call them like this, in our first day in Tokyo.
To be continued...

HUMAN ZOO

My first movie on Berlinale this year was the French/Danish co production “Human Zoo”. I saw the movie title in a Newsweek article some days ago and since the review was really promising, I decided to add it to my personal Berlinale program. I was expecting a painful Balkan story, embedded in the Balkan humor – something like Underground or Balkan-Kan, I guess. Actually the film was completely different. It was quite obvious at first sight that the film was directed by somebody, who doesn´t come originally from the Balkans. The movie was dealing with many important and painful moments from the Balkan reality; however no real aspect was picked out as a central topic. I would even say that the variety of the topics picked up for this movie was too ambitious to be shown within 110 minutes. Finally no one of the topics was really carried out in its whole complexity. And this was a pity…
Many times it was a bit confusing to follow the action switching between the barbarity of the Serbian army in Kosovo, the Bonnie and Clayde story in Belgrade, the destiny of the main character Adria (maybe the name has a kind of symbolic meaning for the region – Adriatic Sea as border between the wild East and the coveted West) in Marseille and the life of the illegal immigrants and the Arab minority in Marseille. The filmmaker and in the same time the main character of the movie – the Dane Rie Rasmussen – told the public before the film that she is a girl and the movie finally is a love story, though I had some problems distinguishing between the love story, the social drama and the gangster movie. Besides that I was wondering the whole time why the main character was everywhere in the movie – ok, she is a main character – that´s fine, but in some scenes it was really overexaggerated, moreover she didn´t even have any specific function in more of the scenes. Instead of this Adria was just accompanying her savior (a Serbian deserter) from the cruelty of the Kosovo war , who was punishing former military criminals on the streets of Belgrade, stealing money from some banks or carrying out illegal arms trade. Finally they developed a kind of love relationship – though a quite strange one – I won´t spoil this part. The role of the main character in the Marseille part of the movie was also kind of confusing. It was not really clear, if she was somebody, who was fighting for justice saving her friend from the claws of the Marseille red light district (one of the visual metaphors in the movie for HumanZoo), hiding herself from the police or making love with her American boyfriend. Actually the love scenes were one of the few really esthetic things in the movie.
The rest was cruel reality, but as I told at the beginning every of these realities deserve its own movie, otherwise each of these problems is just blown out, because even the Zoo is a place, where everything has certain structure, otherwise it becomes Human Jungle.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7849943.stm

Noname

През последната седмица работих над един проект наречен – Southeastern Forum for Sport and Culture.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='„Berlin.

City of Stones“ & „Berlin. City of Smoke“).

New York Times. http://nytimes-se.mayfirst.org/NYTimes-SE_spreads.pdf

“Waltz with Bashir“ vs. „Flipping out“

“love boats”; по време на филма звучи парчето “This is not a love song”; войник сънува кошмари със застреляните от него по време на войната 26 кучета.
